From July 28th to 29th, sponsored by China Business Statistics Association and Data Science and Business Intelligence Branch of China Business Statistics Association, 2018 (10th) International Data Mining and Applied Statistics Research Institute annual meeting hosted by University of Statistics and Applied Mathematics was successfully held in our university.  Professor Cheng Gang, Vice President of our University, Director of the Data Mining Research Center of Xiamen University, Secretary General of the Statistical Professional Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, Professor Zhu Jianping, President of the University Association for Data Mining and Applied Statistics, Professor Wu Xizhi of Renmin University of China, USA Prof. Lin Gongjin, Distinguished Professor of  Penn State University, Professor Tong Tiejun from Hong Kong Baptist University, Dr. Xie Bangyan, Secretary General of China Data Mining Association, and more than 200 people from over 70 universities and business circles, publishers and magazines from home and abroad attended the conference. Professor Li Xiaosheng, Associate Dean of the University of Statistics and Applied Mathematics, presided over the opening ceremony.

      At the opening ceremony, Cheng Gang expressed warm congratulations on the convening of the conference on behalf of the university. He warmly welcomed the presence of experts, scholars and international friends from home and abroad, and introduced the development of the party building and career in the university.  He pointed out that big data promotes the integration of statistics and various disciplines, and promotes the development of various disciplines. It is expected that experts and scholars engaged in data mining and applied statistics will work together to seek common development and further promote roles in data mining and application statistics along with other fields.

   On behalf of the Society, Zhu Jianping briefly reviewed the background and development history of the International Data Mining and Applied Statistics Research Association. He hoped to continue to play the role of platform, bridge and link, and condense more power to promote the deepening of research in the field of data mining and applied statistics.

   After the opening ceremony, the conference held five special reports on the theme of “Data Science Theory and Applied Research in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”.  Professor Wu Xizhi, Professor Tong Tiejun, Professor Lin Gongjin, Professor Lu Erpo, and Dr. Xie Bangyan respectively gave a speech entitled Mathematics - Statistics - Background and Relationships of Computer and Data Science, Statistic Meta Analysis and Evidence-Based Gold, Ghost Data, How fast is China's real economic growth? - Based on the measurement error perspective and the re-estimation of the Kalman filter method and the Smart Life Big Battle special report.  In the group discussion, teachers and students from universities such as Xiamen University and Wuhan University discussed the frontier issues of data mining and application statistics.   

    Representatives from more than 10 companies including Beijing Shangzhitong Data Technology Co., Ltd. discussed big data applications.  

The conference comprehensively summarized and exchanged the latest research progress and achievements in the field of data mining and application statistics, and looked forward to its development directions, providing a good interactive platform for experts and scholars to explore new ideas, exchange new technologies, and display new achievements.  The holding of the conference played an active and effective role in promoting the construction of the Statistics Department of our school, enhancing the influence of the school and further boosting the development of the school.
